WeZend vs Brevo
Written from a real evaluation: the questions worth asking, and what WeZend answers.
This page exists because a customer did the evaluation for us. They put WeZend side by side with Brevo through the REST API, pushed on the parts that mattered to their integration, and handed us a list of gaps. Every item on that list has since shipped — so instead of guessing at someone else's feature matrix, this page compares WeZend against the questions that evaluation asked.
We deliberately don't tell you what Brevo does today. Their product moves, ours moves, and a competitor's comparison page is the worst place to learn either. So each row below is a question you can put to any provider — including the one you're already paying — with WeZend's answer beside it.
The answer we'd lead with is quota design. A send can be marked transactional: true, and that message is exempt from the monthly marketing cap: over the cap it is billed per message as overage instead of being blocked. One shared monthly allowance covering campaigns and password resets is an outage waiting for a good campaign month — the long version is here. And where we don't win, we say so in the FAQ below.
| Capability | WeZend | Brevo |
|---|---|---|
| Transactional mail vs the marketing cap | transactional: true on the same send call; over the cap it bills overage instead of blocking | Ask: one shared allowance, or a separate transactional path? |
| Opt-outs pushed to your system of record | contact.unsubscribed and contact.bounced webhooks — unsubscribe link, preference centre and SMS STOP all fire | Ask which opt-out routes emit an event — SMS STOP included |
| Per-send email envelope control | reply_to, from_name and safelisted custom headers on every send and bulk call | Ask whether a reserved header is rejected by name or silently dropped |
| Replies to a campaign | Land in the Inbox with a message.received event; one MX record on a reply subdomain | Ask where a reply goes today, and what it takes to see it |
| Sender-domain verification | A reason and a hint per check — e.g. DKIM published under the wrong selector | Ask what a failing DKIM check tells you beyond a red cross |
| Channels on one contact profile | Email, SMS, RCS, WhatsApp, voice, push — on the same real-time CDP profile | Check which channels share one profile, and which are add-ons |
| Billing basis | Volume sent; contacts free to 20,000 (60,000 on Scale) | Compare the volume bands — and what a stored contact costs above the included number |
The verdict
Stay with Brevo if breadth across a suite of tools is what you're buying, and one shared send allowance has never caused you an incident. Choose WeZend when the send call itself has to carry more weight: transactional: true so a heavy campaign month can't take down your password resets, contact.unsubscribed and contact.bounced webhooks so an opt-out anywhere reaches your own records, per-send reply_to / from_name / custom headers, replies that land back in the Inbox, and a domain check that names why DKIM failed instead of showing a red cross. Moving across is documented step by step in the Brevo migration guide — suppressions first, so nothing sends to someone who already opted out.
Frequently asked questions
Where is Brevo the better choice?
Brevo has been in the market far longer — it grew up as Sendinblue — and it is a broad suite aimed at small businesses. WeZend is the younger and smaller product, and deliberately deep rather than wide: messaging, customer data and deliverability. If what you need next is another tool in the same login rather than more depth in the ones you already use, list those tools out and check them against ours before you move. We would rather you did that comparison honestly than discover the gap after a migration.
What should I actually test during an evaluation?
Four calls, on any platform. One: max out the monthly send limit, then send a password reset — does it go? Two: subscribe a webhook to unsubscribe events, then reply STOP to an SMS — does your endpoint hear about it? Three: set a Reply-To and then try a reserved header like List-Unsubscribe — do you get an error naming the header, or does it vanish? Four: verify a sending domain that publishes DKIM under a different provider's selector — does the screen tell you which selector is wrong, or just show a red cross? On WeZend those answers are yes, yes, a 400 naming the header, and the selector by name.
Does transactional: true let me bypass anything else?
No, and that's deliberate. It lifts the marketing volume cap, and it exempts the message from marketing frequency caps and quiet hours — because a third password reset in an hour should not silently vanish. It does not override suppression lists, your budget cap, a blocked region or a suspended account; those are not quota decisions. On the Free plan with no card on file it still stops, because there is no way to bill the overage and we would rather say that plainly than invent an unmetered send path.
